The Academy of English Language in Canberra is a leading institution which specialises in teaching English to foreigners. It is registered with CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students), is a member of English Australia (EA), and is fully accredited by the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) and the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA).
The English language programs in Canberra are designed to immerse participants in the language. Participants gain valuable information about the Australian culture and society as well as improve overall communication skills. A variety of English Language Programs are offered to cater for a range of academic needs. The curriculum is based on the needs of each proficiency level and is designed to allow participants to progress rapidly and achieve language fluency. Modern teaching methods focus on instilling linguistic, practical, communicative, and cultural aspects of the language, while being fully immersed as the Australian way of life. High Elementary to Advanced Levels are available (for a description of levels see 'Placement Test & Proficiency Levels' below). Classes are held from Monday to Friday. Each class is 45 minutes to 1 hour long.
GENERAL ENGLISH
Levels: High Elementary to Intermediate
Duration: 5 weeks to an Academic Year (5 week modules)
Classes: 25 hours per week
Class Times: 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday; and 9:00am to 12:30pm on Wednesday
The General English Program integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition, Grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are emphasized to enable students to attain communicative proficiency. The curriculum is based on the needs of each proficiency level (see 'Placement Test & Proficiency Levels' below for description) and is designed to allow participants to progress rapidly and achieve language fluency. Modern and interactive teaching methods focus on instilling linguistic, practical, communicative, and cultural aspects of the language, while being fully immersed in the Australian way of life.
Emphasis is placed on developing participants' oral expression, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and grammatical skills. Class exercises focus on complex sentence structures, idioms, pronunciation, intonation and fluency. Participants gain valuable information about contemporary Australian culture and society.
ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)
Levels: Intermediate to Advanced
Duration: 10 - 20 weeks
Classes: 25 hours per week
Class Times: 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday; and 9:00am to 12:30pm on Wednesday
This course is specifically designed for students who wish to prepare for further academic studies in universities, TAFE, Business College or other institutions. The EAP program provides rigorous training in academic skills such as: academic writing, academic reading and critical analysis of texts, listening and note taking, oral presentations and tutorials, library and assignment research skills, study skills, and computer literacy. Classes also include preparation for the IELTS exam. The overall aim of the program is to prepare students for university studies, and to instil the linguistic and scholastic aspects of the English language.
ANU ACCESS
Duration:10 weeks

This program is provided specifically for students who already have a conditional offer to either an ANU undergraduate or postgraduate program. Students who complete the ANU Access program with a score over 60% will satisfy the English Language requirement for entry to ANU (equivalent to IELTS 6.5).
Topics that are relevant to academic discussion are included, as well as the skills necessary for fulfilling academic tasks. Emphasis is placed on the development of analytical and critical thinking which are vital for success in tertiary studies. The course comprises of five major strands: Academic Listening, Academic Speaking, Academic Reading, Academic Writing and Study Skills. Classes also cover the structures of English and expand students' general vocabulary. Additional course materials will include newspaper, journal, and magazine articles to inform students about Australian and international issues and to provide useful background for the students' future studies. Assessment may include various tasks such as oral presentations, essays, reports, and a final exam.
FOUNDATION STUDIES
Duration: 28 weeks (2 terms)

This program is an excellent pathway for university entry, offering many advantages for you when you decide to study in Australia. Students accepted into the Foundation Studies Program are allocated a provisional place at The Australian National University. Students who successfully complete the Foundation Studies Program and meet the University's required academic and English standards are guaranteed entry to their chosen undergraduate degree course provided that the grade required is obtained (minimum 60%).

The Foundation Studies Program runs for 2 terms, consisting of 4 units per term. Units studied include Academic English combined with introductory subjects related to your degree. Some units in the Foundation Studies Program are university level courses and may be counted towards your undergraduate degree.

The Academy of English in Canberra caters for High Elementary to Advanced levels (Beginners are recommended to study at one of our other Academies in Sydney, Brisbane or Perth). A placement test is held on the first day of the program to ensure students are placed in the appropriate class according to their current level of English.
HIGH ELEMENTARY
This level is for those who have a grasp of simple sentence structures and have learnt basic grammar. Classes focus on improving participants' vocabulary and sentence structures, as well as listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Phonetic exercises and drills ensure that participants learn the correct pronunciation and intonation.
INTERMEDIATE
This level is for those who are able to converse on general topics and express themselves using complex sentence structures. Participants learn to communicate in general situations with clarity and confidence, including describing personal experiences. Writing and reading comprehension exercises include composing personal letters and understanding general work correspondences.
HIGH INTERMEDIATE
This level is for those who are able to converse in detail on specific topics and express themselves using more complex sentence structures. Classes build on student's grammar and vocabulary skills, enabling participants to express themselves functionally in different contexts. Emphasis is placed on participants' grammar, syntax, writing, oral expression, and listening comprehension skills. Exercises to improve writing, speaking, and grammar skills include writing reports, letters, narratives, and essays. Phonetics exercises and drills ensure that participants quickly master correct pronunciation.
ADVANCED
This level is for those who can discuss specific topics, raise complex questions, and express their opinions clearly using correct pronunciation. Participants can express themselves systematically using appropriate expressions and language norms. The curriculum is focused on enabling participants to express themselves proficiently at an abstract level. To improve fluency, class work includes advanced writing and oral expression, such as essays, commentaries, speeches and debates.
HIGH ADVANCED
This level is for those who posses a high command of the English language and culture and are able to converse fluently and effectively using appropriate expressions and language norms. The curriculum is focused on enabling participants to master the language and express themselves fluently at an abstract level. Class work focuses on perfecting oral expression and writing skills as well as developing a global perspective of Australian culture in relation to participants' particular field of interest.
Excursions and cultural activities are important components of learning, and provide participants with a deeper understanding of the Australian lifestyle. A wide range of free excursions to major attractions, museums, historic sites and galleries are provided in the Total Program. Activities vary depending on program intake. Guided tours and activities are held on weekday afternoons and weekends.

Teachers are native speakers and have degrees in teaching English as a Second Language. Up-to-date, carefully selected materials are used in class, giving participants valuable information on modern-day Australian culture and society while developing their language and communication skills.
Participants' progress is continuously monitored and assessed through class participation, homework, and tests throughout the program. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is awarded a Certificate which indicates the completed level of proficiency attained by the student.
For credit transfers, participants should contact the study abroad advisor or English Language department at their home college or university. Details of the program's total class hours, curriculum, and duration should be given.
