Williams Business College

For 110 years Williams has helped students achieve their personal best in business training. Williams is unique as an educational institution in Australia, and possibly the world, in that it has been owned and managed, hands-on, by three generations of the one family for 110 years. Hugh George Williams founded the College in 1894.

He set out his goals as to:

  • Strive for excellence in business education
  • Encourage students to achieve their personal best
  • Provide personalised tuition through experienced, qualified and dedicated staff
  • Keep abreast of improvements and advances in technology
  • Offer programs relevant to current employment market standards.
Our graduates benefit from the long reputation of the College, while at the same time continuing to build it and their own reputations by delivering a competitive edge in the employment market.

Employment is our First Priority
Our programs ensure your learning is the latest for business, and that you have the skills to be part of the team in your workplace. While no training organisation can guarantee your employment, we work very hard to ensure you get the best start. Having over 100 years of our graduates in all industries and around the world gives you an advantage in obtaining the position you want. Maarit and Sami Aho, and Ville Leppanen were students of the Seinajoki Polytechnic (Finland) when they spent a semester in Australia, at Williams, as part of their Marketing Degree. Williams students can spend a semester in Finland learning (in English) about business in Scandinavia and the commercially booming former USSR and eastern Europe.

Globalisation
Today's workplace is global. Learning the skills to deal with this needs more than just classroom theory. At Williams, we put globalisation into practice:

  • By creating a multi-cultural student mix within the College. Around 25% of our students are international. Teachers are able to blend this cultural mix into activities, while students create long-term networks with classmates from around the world.
  • By incorporating globalisation principles into all relevant subjects.
  • By creating strategic alliances with sister Colleges and Universities in other countries to facilitate exchange programs for our students.
e-Business
E-business is about doing normal business using the tools that computers and the Internet have created. Though the ground rules for business haven't changed, it requires a paradigm shift in thinking to understand how the way most business is done has changed. Williams incorporates e-business competencies, principles and thinking throughout the syllabus, supported by e-business-aware teachers, redesigned subject content and delivery, and the use of the College's IT facilities.

Syllabus
The minimum that we need to teach is determined by industry in a set of packages and competencies. We cover this amply, but we also cover a lot more.

  • To excel in business today, a person must be thoroughly comfortable using a broad range of computer software tools. Our students not only learn the full spectrum of relevant programs, but also make routine use of them in assignment and project work across the programs.
  • Because we also prepare Business, Tourism and Hospitality students for extension to degree level, our subjects are substantially meatier than the minimum standard required by industry. They are equivalent to first and second-year university subjects, but are delivered over more than double the number of class hours normally devoted to lectures and tutorials at university.
  • We encourage students to multi-skill by creating the environment that encourages multiple majors and qualifications. This gives our graduates a broad scope of industries and interest areas in which to pursue their careers.
Flexible Study
Our programs are broken down into one-semester chunks. Each semester delivers a qualification level in a step-like process. Within each semester, learning is further broken down into 5 and 10 week subjects, each with clear objectives and a timeframe short enough to encourage active, organised study and assessment. We find that students like the clarity of this delivery method, and produce good results.

Fast-Track Your Studies
You will be in employment sooner (our vocational programs average half the length of the TAFE equivalent) and students who progress to the Bachelor Degree can take on full-time or part-time relevant employment after one year (following the Advanced Diploma).

Career Success Program
At Williams we strive to ensure that graduates have the best opportunity to begin a career that they will enjoy, and for which they are suited. To achieve this, we have developed a Career Success Program (CSP) that involves:

  • A Career Strategy component in each program.
  • Strategic alliances with employers, specialist personnel recruitment firms and industry connections.
  • A CSP Co-ordinator who works with the Director of Studies, teachers and individually with students in each area to maximise student work experience and employment opportunities.
Caring and Encouragement
We have built a reputation on providing good care for our students. Supporting this are:
  • A mentor network of teachers for academic support
  • A Director of Studies to help you manage your program
  • Student Services personnel to help in other areas
  • An active Student Council to manage the social and cultural activities in the College, and student/management liaison.
Top IT Facilities
Williams IT facilities mirror computer topologies found in today's medium-sized businesses. All students have access to the Internet and College Intranet, and individual network disk space. We have over 100 Hewlett Packard, IBM and Digital fully networked workstations to service around 300 students. Network system software is based on Windows NT and Windows 2000. Application software is based on Microsoft Office components, MYOB, Galileo, Fidelio and other software commonly found in business.

Endorsement
The College and its programs are fully accredited by the appropriate organisations:

  • New South Wales Vocational Education and training Accreditation Board (VETAB)
  • Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET)
  • Australian Hospitality Review Panel (AHRP)
  • Australian Tourism Training Review Panel (ATTRP)
The qualifications are also recognised internationally, and are listed on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).

The Campus
The North Sydney Campus is located on Levels 1 and 2 of the Stanton Library building in modern, air-conditioned premises close to all transport. It is one block from the North Sydney CBD. The building impresses all visitors with its sunny balconies and open classrooms looking out onto parkland.

A Pleasant Place to Work
The building is semi-circular with balconies off many of the classrooms and student common room. Students have a common room and an active Student Council which organises many activities on and off campus. Williams IT facilities mirror computer topologies found in today's medium-sized businesses. All students have their own College email addresses, and have access to computer facilities for private study and research during free periods as well as outside class hours.
